Do you ever commute by bike? Or maybe you’d like to try? Active Commute Week might be a fun way to get you motivated. Simply sign up at www.acwgr.org and log all your active trips for the week of June 17-21. You might even win an award or prizes. Daily and weekly prizes are awarded for various categories. Rides to work, for groceries or even to friends’ houses all count. There are some great events during that week too including weekday commuter pit stops and a happy hour on Friday, June 21st. So – why not give it a try and get some healthy exercise at the same time? You can sign up as an individual or as part of a group - maybe even get your co-workers involved. Try to log as many active trips as you can during active commute week. And – really important – don’t forget to share pictures on social media tagged with #acwgr

A few pointers for first timers on bikes. Maybe try a test ride a few days beforehand to estimate your time and try your route. Make sure you have a secure lock and a good visible place to lock up. Pump up those tires and don’t forget your helmet. Consider lights if you’re riding near dusk or dawn. Take your time and enjoy the ride.

Active Commute week isn’t just about bicycles. You can walk, ride or roll. How about skateboarding to work? Walking. Or kayaking? Take a GRATA bus. Even carpooling counts. They’ve all been done here in GR and all reduce your carbon footprint. They all bring health benefits to our community too. Bicycling might be a favorite method of the bike coalition but any way you participate is great!
